Is Kindness a Weakness?

I recently had a conversation about leadership and how a leader requires “Achiever” or “Command” in their top 5 strengths.

Mine are “Harmony”, “Empathy” and “Individualization”, as well as “Consistency” and “Adaptability” and apparently they are not related to Leadership.

I thought maybe these strengths were weak so my mind wandered back to their true meaning, or at least what I was explained when I did this.

Harmony isn’t about wanting everything good all the time. It’s about building bridges and finding consensus within conflict.

Empathy is about understanding other people’s point of view and it’s deeply related to emotional intelligence.

EI is now more valuable to Leadership than IQ as per latest leadership “trends”.

Individualization is acknowledging each person’s strengths and optimizing them, making the most of each individual contribution to the whole. “The whole is more than the sum of the parts”. It’s about bringing individual synergies together.

I’m not a super brain, I’m not a numbers person.

I’m a people’s person who can follow a process.

But we need to be mindfull that when we privilege numbers over people, we privilege Management over Leadership.

Which is fine if that’s what we’re looking for.

We just shouldn’t be labeling them as the same thing when they’re actually not.

The idea behind this page is to share my opinion and experience in what seems to be a crazy world nowadays. I look at myself, my friends and acquaintances and hear so many different, yet similar stories… of our search for Love, disappointments, insights. I wanted to share them! Considering cultural differences some adjustments had to be made. Hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it!

  1. I would love to pick your brain on how your Top 5 show themselves. My wife shares four of her top 5 strengths with you — consistency (1), empathy (2), adaptability (4), and harmony (5). With consistency and adaptability being competing themes with one being adverse to change and the other welcoming it, I’m having a hard time seeing how they can both show present as overwhelmingly strong talents. How do these two themes specifically show up in your life, and do they compliment each other somehow?

    1. I don’t know if they’re overwhelmingly strong talents, I just don’t think they’re necessarily weak talents either. I think they can manifest in different contexts and of course one of them will stand out depending on the circumstances. Consistency, for me at least, is all about knowing myself and believing a consistent behavior will bring value, as it kind of “defines you”. You know mostly how you will behave and act. Also people will get used to “how you act”, getting to know you. This value can be regarding people or process, behavior or action (or all of them). As for the adaptability, I adapt much better and quicker to things I like. It takes me longer to adjust to things I don’t like doing or that I don’t believe in. Once I adjust, usually I’m able to deliver consistently. So I guess they end up blending despite them looking adverse. Consistency doesn’t mean that you’ll always do the same thing, it just shows there’s a pattern. Adaptability doesn’t mean you’ll always be able to cope with everything. It just shows you’re flexible enough to adjust to circumstances or adjust to different people/environments.
